Numbers 5:7 “then he shall confess his sin which he hath done: and he shall make restitution for his guilt in full, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him in respect of him of whom he hath been guilty God is giving the law inwhich the Hebrews were to live. It tells them how they were to relate to God and to one another. They were to be a model unto the world of a people dedicated to God. They would be a blessed and feared people. Today’s passage speaks of relating to others. The concept of restitution is introduced. It basically means if we wrong someone, we are to make it up to them. Jesus summed up the law with two commands: love God and love people. This falls under the “love people” part. If we are to live harmoniously with others, we are to be aware of them and their concerns. God raises the bar. If we interfere with someone, we aren’t to restore things as they were, but to add 1/5 profit for their troubles. This makes up for the hassle that they had to endure. This is how we can still see someone fondly. If they went over and above to fix it, then we are grateful. We aren’t focused on the wrong done, but impressed that they were so concerned with us. Lord, thank You for the love You have for us and others. Thank You that You that You want us to love others and this is how You are instructing us: to make restitution.
