Cain and Abel

1 John 3:11,12 For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. Wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brothers were righteous. That’s a good question, why did Cain kill Abel? I had some questions when I read the Genesis account. Both brothers were bringing the fruit of their labor. Can was a farmer and brought some of his crops, while able was a herdsman and he sacrificed one of his animals. It appears that each brought the fruit of their labor. That seems natural. It says that God accepted Abel’s sacrifice, but not Cain’s. I would assume that God gave them some directions ahead of time. The biblical offering for sin is the shedding of blood. Bringing vegetables isn’t sufficient. It may be the brothers had typical sibling rivalry. Abel may have been teasing him that his profession was God honored, while Cain’s wasn’t. We know that things got heated to the point of murder. John calls Cain evil and Abel righteous. Why? Abel did what God said. Are we open to God’s instructions? To be a christian means that we’ve submitted to Christ’s lordship. We have to do this daily. Jesus said in Revelation 3:20, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me.” We can extend that analogy. While this is referring to opening the front door to the house, we also have separate rooms in that have their own doors. We spend the rest of our lives letting Christ deeper with in. We feel resistant. However, the more we let Him in, the freer we become. Lord, help us to be as Abel and follow Your instructions. Thank You for the life that You give us, as we continue to let You in.
