I Corinthians 11:3
“But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.”
The bible established order in relation to Him and the family. God is the Head of all and man is the head of the family. Society has had a problem with this since the sixties. Probably earlier. However, that’s how God created it. We see at creation that God made the animals, male and female. God gave Adam the job of naming them all. As he was doing this he saw that all had a suitable mate except him. God did this on purpose so he would see his need. It was then that he put him to sleep and created Eve from his side.
How do these roles play out? We work together and make decisions together. Things go much better if roles are understood. Ephesians 5 fleshes these out better. The man is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He laid down his life for it. That’s great love. The woman is to respect her husband. She doesn’t belittle him, but honors and respects him. Some may say, “She is smarter and wiser than him. She should be calling the shots.” He would put her in charge of areas where she is more strongly equipped. It does mean he isn’t the head.
The greatest thing a couple does is to raise godly children. That takes a team effort. The children benefit greatly when they are raised by parents that love and respect each other. They learn to respect and love one another. They also learn to be treated in that manner. There should be no abuse at all in the relationship.
In the marriage counseling that I had done much of the work was trying to fix the balance of love and respect. We would go over a dispute that the couple had during the week and address how it could have gone better. Most everything came down to repairing the love and respect.
God knows best. His ways are higher than ours. It’s best to trust and obey Him. He will help us. He blesses us. My wife and I had our struggles. We’ve grown into these roles. We are so happy and in love. That’s what God does to those that obey Him. Thank You, Lord.
