Esther 6:1-3
‘During that night the king could not sleep, so he gave an order to bring the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. And it was found written what Mordecai had reported about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs who were doorkeepers, that they had sought to attack King Ahasuerus. Then the king said, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” And the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”’
God remembers those who are faithful to Him. Mordecai did this good deed and saved the king. He had been forgotten. However, God pokes the king and sleep flees from him. He knows that reading through the daily records would make him sleepy. He stumbles upon the incident with Mordecai. He learns that nothing had been done for Him. God blesses us like that.
This is a negative example, but I had a boss a few years ago that didn’t like me. I felt he could have gotten rid of me. A friend of mine at the district office, who was my boss’s boss shared an incident in which our two families were camping together. She shared that with him. He was stunned. God put her there to protect me. He backed off after that.
We don’t need to worry about our lot. God will guide and protect us. At times he will give us honor. Psalm 23 says, “Though preparest a table for me in the presence of our enemies”. He will do this in His time.
This was more than honoring Mordecai; it was saving him from Haman. The next couple of verses has Haman walking into the king’s court about to ask for permission to hang Mordecai. The king asks which of his officials are present. They say, “Haman”. The king asks him how he could give honor to someone. Haman thinks it will be for him. When finished, the king says to Haman “Do that for Mordecai.” Nothing could have been more humiliating for Haman.
In one stroke God honored Mordecai, protected him from Haman and embarrassed Haman. That was masterful. These are things God does easily. Writers imagine these things, but rarely does life go like this. It does with God.
