Matthew 27:50
“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit.”
Finally, it’s over. This was planned since the fall and probably earlier. It may have been planned when God decided to create man. They knew we would fall. The ultimate act of love would be done. An act which could only be done by God. No human couldn’t save themselves, let alone others.
We can see the great anxiety Jesus experienced in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was sweating great drops of blood. He knew it wasn’t possible, but He prayed for another way as He was terrified.
I believe the punishment for sin began in the garden. Then came the arrest and the great injustice of the trial. Then the heartbreak of the crowd choosing Barabas instead of Him. Then came the scourging and the humiliation. He had to carry His cross in His weakened and wounded state. Finally, He’s at the cross and they crucify Him. More humiliation as the priests gloat. His fellow prisoners join in. He feels the full brunt of the pain as He rejects the wine.
It’s finally over. He commits His Spirit to God and dies. Such love. No complaints. He takes it. It feels like the conclusion of a song and the note is held. It reverberates with our soul. He did this for us. He wanted to save us and more importantly to reunite us to Him forever. We will never forget this. All through out eternity we will look back in awe and wonder at this act. Thank You, Lord.
