Retirement

I Chronicles 23:1
“Now when David reached old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.”
David retired. It’s not often in scripture we see this. I would assume he reached an age where it affected his ability to rule. Pastor Chuck said retirement wasn’t biblical. So does John Piper. I think retirement fine as long as there is something to keep you busy. I’m at retirements door. For my profession, I the right age and I have the right number of years. However, I don’t want to stop. What I’m doing is I teach one less class; it’s an 80% contract. Fortunately I get off at 1:00 daily. It’s amazing. My morning’s are busy, I get to see my coworker friends, I get good time with great students and it’s a good challenge. I can see myself doing this for years.
Even though I’m not young, I feel it. Maybe working with young people has something to do with that. I’ve always felt this way.
As a christian we are subservient to God. He will open doors to other activities, if it’s His will. Right now I don’t see anything. I’m positioned to start counseling, but I don’t have clients. I think that’s the next stage. I believe my contentment with teaching is from Him. I feel this is where He wants me. When it’s His will that I move on, He will provide something.
As we follow the Lord, He gives us purpose and fill us with contentment. David said, “My cup overflows”. It’s a wonderful life. The world thinks we’re crazy for following God. They see it as limiting and enslaving. Actually it’s much more freeing than not being in Christ. John 8:33,34 says, ‘They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’? Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.”‘ They weren’t aware of their enslavement. Neither are those in the world.
Lord, thank You for Your Son, His great sacrifice and the great life You give us. We are so blessed because You are so good. Thank You for filling our days.
