Blessed are the Poor in Spirit

2 Samuel 12:9
“Why then have you despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own, for you have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites.”

This is quite a low for David. He is one of the greatest believers in the bible. Yet, he sins in a bad way. What are we to take away from this? That all of us are capable of sin.
This is the reason Jesus gave the beatitude, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God", (Matthew 5:3). What does this mean? In a spiritual sense, we are in great need. We are sinners in need of salvation. If we are saved, then we need God's help. Just as a baby is born and is in need of food and shelter, so if we didn't have God's help, we would fall away.
We may have doubts about this? Peter did as well. Jesus predicted that Peter would betray him. Here is Peter's response, But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death", (Luke 22:33). Peter didn't believe Him. Because of this he wasn't on guard, he didn't ask God for help. It was a foretold disaster.
God is right. We are poor in spirit. The sooner we grasp that, the better off we'll be. We will understand our vulnerabilities and stay close to God. We will understand our weakness and stay close to God. We will understand our reliance on Him and stay close to Him and so on
The reward will be much. The passage says, "their's is the kingdom of God". How so? We now have God living in us. We are His temple. As we walk with Him, we learn to obey Him. He is king in us and our lives are a place where He is king. A radius of His rule begins to expand from us. Those around us begin to be influenced by Him. They begin to obey and follow Him.
What a privilege, to have the all wise, all powerful, all loving God in us. We are on His team. He doesn't adopt us grudgingly. He makes us all star players. Not the best, but the best we can be according to the gifts He's given us.
What a privilege to be used to bring others to Him. He gives us love for others. We begin to pray for them and seek for ways to reach them. Some respond.
Lord, thank You for the warning of David. Help us to know how needful we are and seek Your help. Thank You that You willingly give it and bless us.
