David Seeks to Help the Ostracized

2 Samuel 9:3
‘So the king asked, “Is there anyone left of Saul’s family to whom I can show the kindness of God?” Ziba answered, “There is still Jonathan’s son, who is lame in both feet.”’

It's always been valuable to be physically strong, but more so in David's time. Today, there is much to make one capable. I have a disabled coworker who does the job as well as anyone. Stephen Hawkins was the worlds most brilliant physicist, yet he was bound to a wheel chair and couldn't speak.
In David's time, a crippled or handicapped person was solely a dependent. Society saw this one as a burden and one who couldn't care for himself. Jonathon's son was raised in wealth and probably had nurses and helpers to care for him. However, Saul and Jonathon died and the kingdom was lost to them. It doesn't say if he was presently wealthy or how he was cared for. He was most likely a dependent.
David wants to pass on his blessings to those in Saul's house, so he inquires. It seems there is only this one. He's in quite a difficult place. He's crippled with no means to care for himself. He is of the prior regime, which makes him unpopular or seen with suspicion as a threat to David's throne.
This action speaks well of David. He holds no grudge. He doesn't seem threatened at all. This is a descendant of Saul, whom David's owes nothing. Even though Saul sought to kill David, he seemed to still be respectful of him.
Jonathon's son is analogous to us who were lost and sought after by a loving God. We were in a rough spot in much need. Much more than we knew. The prodigal son is a similar story. God showed much more than concern, He sacrificed His Son for us, than went after us.
Thank You, God for Your great love for us. You rescued us and made a great life for us. You've made beautiful things of us.
