David Cares For His Family

I Samuel 22:3
‘And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come and stay with you until I know what God will do for me.”’

David is looking out for his loved ones. He knows Saul is seeking to kill him. As he thinks this through, he realizes that Saul could use his parents to get to him. David goes to a foreign king and asks a favor. That is for his parents to stay with him. The king of Moab grants this.
We also have to protect our loved ones. We do this in many ways. We move to neighborhoods that are safe. We put our children in schools that are good. We put our children in activities that develop them.
Kids have to eventually look after their parents and siblings. As age and health limit them, the adult kids look after the family members. This is a challenge that goes in all directions. It can be difficult on the family.
I Timothy 5:8 says, "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." We are to care for our families. It's a mandate of the gospel.
David is a great example of a man. Our society is threatened by manhood, thus they downplay it or make it appear toxic. God gave us a great example of a man in David. He has the expected traits of bravery, strength, but He has others that wouldn't be expected. Godliness is one. He loves the Lord, listens to Him and seeks to follow Him. He's in touch with his feelings. The Psalms are full of David speaking of his inner life. He talks of his fears, disappointments and all this fits in with God. He's a good friend as seen with Jonathon. Today's passage shows his care for his family. All of this explains why David is a great leader and a magnet for guys. Verse two tells of how 400 men rallied to David.
Lord, thank You for the example of David. He proved to be a great family man in addition to all the other traits. Help us to care for our family as well.
