I Thessalonians 3:7-9
“For this reason, brethren, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith; 8for now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord. 9For what thanks can we render to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice before our God on your account.”
What kinds of things bring us joy? The Lord created the world for us. There is much in it to enjoy. We all have our hobbies and activities. We were created as social beings. A great deal of our joy is found in relationships. All of these things are wonderful and good as we balance them in regard to our faith.
Paul focuses on a joy received through his ministry. He has a shepherds heart. Much of his joy come from the health of his flock. Paul and his team were comforted by the news that the Thessalonian church was healthy.
A couple of questions arise: do we have a ministry and is our heart in it? Do we worry for those we attend to? Do we pray for them when away? This is not meant to be guilt evoking, but motivational. I’m inspired by those I’m in ministry with, as they pray for those involved. They spend part of their free time becoming better equipped to serve. One reads novels and stories on the topic.
It’s ok to enjoy life as described in the second paragraph. But do we have more than that? Are we involved in ministry of some sort and is our heart in it? If not, that’s a good prayer, “Lord, use me. Give me a heart for others.”
Lord, thanks for Paul’s example. Help us to gain joy in serving others.
