1 Peter 5:2
“Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, according to the will of God; nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;”
Yesterday’s entry spoke how we misunderstand God. We think He’s angry or at least unhappy and it’s up to us to fix that. Because we feel guilty we avoid God. Much like Adam and Eve did in the garden. They heard God coming, so they hid. That seems to be the natural inclination of many.
This is difficult for God. He loves us, wants to know us and to be involved in our daily lives. Yet, we are hiding. It’s like coaxing a scared animal out of a hiding place. How does He draw us? One way is life’s circumstances. We daily encounter things that distress us. We want answers and assistance. We often look to God. Thus begins a journey of looking to and relying on God. There are plenty of other ways He draws us.
2 Corinthians 9:7, says that we are to give to God willingly, not under compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver. This relaxes us. We don’t feel forced. It’s in this state that we learn to serve Him. We learn to serve Him in the area of our gifting. The elder mentioned in today’s passage shepherds the flock because he loves them and wants the best for them. They aren’t a burden to be tolerated. He has a heart for others and wants to help.
Lord, thank You that You aren’t angry with us. Help us to continue to draw confidently to You. Help us to serve You with a willing heart.
