Living as if Today Were Our Last, Part II

2 Timothy 2:4

No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.”
I insert this passage because it refers to proper focus. Once a person accepts Christ, the salvation issue has been settled. In a sense, that person could die today and wake up in heaven.

When one is ready to die, living is easier. That one isn’t bound up with thoughts of where eternity is to be spent (Colossians 3:2). I would image a soldier would have a “clearer head” if the eternity issues were resolved.

What would be different if my death were soon? I have people who I need to call about salvation. Most are older people that I worry about. I would make those calls. I would want closure and goodbyes with family and friends. However, we will all be gathered together again, just as Moses was gathered to his people. I would want them to know I was proud of them and to continue on with The Lord.

What would be the same? I am a christian. Therefore, I follow Christ. He has helped me through tough times, good times and mundane times. I attempt to dedicate each day to Him and trust His guidance. He teaches me more about being patient and caring. However, it may not be that different in my last season. It’s as if he’s my trail guide. I’ve been checking in with him for close to 40 years. If it were the last hike, it would feel similar. I would be a little nervous, like the nervousness of one is finally hiking Half Dome.

Lord, thank You that Jesus’ death made the salvation issue and easy one. Help us to keep our focus in the right places.
