The City of God

Hebrews 11:8-10
By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Abraham was a wealthy man from an established family. It was a big deal that he left his family and his inheritance. It’s like the child of Bill Gates who was to take over the family business, along with it’s wealth. I’m over dramatizing. He left for something better. This ‘better deal’ hadn’t materialized, nor was it guaranteed to him while he was alive. It would be like being a child of Richard O’Neill who owned all of South Orange County. He could be riding his horse on property that would one day be Mission Viejo. It was presently open land, but one day be a wonderful community.
He did it because he trusted the one who promised. More importantly, Abraham wanted to be allied with God. It’s like being chosen for a recess game in school and being picked by a cool kid.
We also are promised a life guided by God. When we accept Christ, we have that promise. I am now 35 years into my walk with Jesus. It’s awesome. I have a great, godly family. I feel he has guided me in my career and I feel I’m respected in it. He has given me great friendships over the years. He has built me, in terms of my character. He has kept me from evil. His Word is my council. I read it daily and it’s the main way He speaks to us. I’m promised Heaven, the Six Flags of the future. I get to walk with Him. This is my City of God. He is into the fourth decade of it’s development. It didn’t start with me. My godly mom gave me the vision. My life is just a wing. My children will further it.
Genesis 5:24 says, “Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him.” I don’t claim to be that close, but it’s nice to dream. Oddly enough, God wants all of us to be this close.
Thank You, God, for calling us into the drawing room to see Your plans for a great future.
