Fearing God

2 Samuel 24:14
‘Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us now fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”‘

What a wise answer. David had sinned and punishment was coming. He was given three choices: seven years of famine, three months of being on the run from his enemies or three days of a plaque. He chose the third. He knew God was merciful, but people were not.
David was God fearing. Proverbs 9:10 says, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This is quite different from the world. It sees God's ways as backwards and foolish. Whenever Hollywood puts a christian or a pastor in a film, they aren't good characters.
Those that oppose God are going the devil's route. They want to be in charge of their own lives and do what they want. While that seems like freedom and independence, they are enslaving themselves to their desires. 2 Peter 2:19 says, "They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to depravity. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him."
To be God fearing, means we are to obey Him, even though it may not make sense. Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding." It's like trusting the compass, even though it seems the opposite of the way to go.
Walking with Christ is trusting Him every step of the way. Frustrations will arise, as well as doubts. We have to commit those to Him and ask for help. The feelings and doubts may not evaporate, but He will get us through.
In today's passage, David leaned on God and His mercy. We will learn that this does not spare David and the people from a consequence. David and his kingdom survives, but there is much loss of life. This is a little tough to understand. It seems like the people paid for David's sins. Maybe because David is a shepherd and that damage to them is nearly as bad as damage to him. I'm sure his reputation was scarred as some would have reminded his of this incident.
Lord, thank You for Your mercies. Thank You for getting us through. Even though we have doubts and unanswered questions You give us enough.
