Ephesians 1:13
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation– having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
We were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit. Several things come to mind with the concept of sealing. I think of security. The paint job on a car is sealed with a clear coat. This is for it’s protection and durability. When we come to Christ we become His spoil in the battle. We think we are in charge, independant and aware. When in reality we are ignorantly walking across a battle field. The world, the flesh and the devil (Mark 4:15-17) are the enemies of our soul. The world’s message is a steady drumbeat of peer pressure against the message of Christ. Our flesh puts a compass north within us which leads us away from God. The devil is an adversary who strategizes against us. Just as he sought to take out Job, so he wants to destroy or capture us. We need protection. The Holy Spirit seals us. Maybe in heaven the tape will be rolled back and we’ll see our lives with spiritual goggles. These would allow us to see all of the invisible things that occured. We would probably be horrified. Thank You, Lord, for protecting us. The second meaning of a seal indicate ownership and authenticity. Much like one’s signature makes valid a contract or in times of old it was a wax imprint. This legitimizes the transaction. We are God’s. Much like those in business protect their investment, so God has an interest in us. He invests His attention, effort, energy and more in us. Like a coach puts time in a promising player, so we are His focus. We should allow ourselves to feel our worth. Most of us have our insecurities. When others invest in us, we feel special. God does this and more. We should feel important. We are not aware of the evidence of this in the world or on the outside. Reflect on it. Give thanks for it. We take this in by faith. Lord, thank You for Your protection and Your worth. Help us to understand the value You place on us.
