Choosing Blindness

2 Peter 1:9
“For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.”

This verse used to discourage me. The list of traits that Peter referred to is a long one. It seemed overwhelming to attend to those things.

I’ve adopted a new mindset in regards to this. Matthew 6:33 says “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all of these things shall be added to you.” These traits will mature and grow as we are seeking The Lord. I don’t need to worry about them.

Situations rise which will focus on any one of them. Work on that one. God takes care of the rest.

If we don’t seek Him, then our spiritual life falls into disrepair. That’s where today’s verse applies. We become blind or short-sighted. This is spiritual sight. We aren’t placing value on the spiritual, so we are willingly dulling our spiritual senses. We are ignoring the blessing of His presence. We are hardening our hearts to the Spirit’s nudge towards obedience. We become less sensitive to the needs of others and more self focused.

Peter points out that in ignoring these things, we are forgetting the forgiveness of our sins. This was a monumental event. We’ve chosen to forget it. We don’t see our daily transgressions (1 John 1:9). The purpose of communion is to remember the cross. It reminds us of the great work Jesus has done for us. This may mean that we are living in a state of compromise. We may be dabbling in sin. Which would explain why we ignore the Spirit.

We are faced with obedience often. If we fall, don’t allow guilt to shame us into staying away. Confess and move on. Do it quickly. Trust in His grace and assistance to help us. This dependance is what it means to be spiritually sensitive. We don’t need high skills. It’s being willing.

Lord, help us to stay close to You. Thank You that it’s You who makes us able.
