Life’s Ups and Downs

Job 2:10

‘But he said to her, “You are speaking as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we actually accept good from God but not accept adversity?” Despite all this, Job did not sin with his lips.’

Life has it’s cycles. They go up and down. We love the ups and dislike the downs. God is the variable that changes it all. He’s a loving Father. We can trust Him. Here’s Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all to work for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose”. That’s amazing. He can take all in our lives and flip it and work it out for the good.

For us humans that’s impossible. That’s what we all spend our energies doing, trying to repair our messes. We can blame others. We attempt to either change them or remove them from our lives. That’s probably why some commit murder. They feel that this person is interfering with their happiness. These efforts drive people insane.

We don’t have to strive or worry. God is with us. Here’s a verse from Genesis 50:20, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” I stumbled upon this website that speaks of the “but God” verses. I knew there was one. This site shows 31 of them. They are all containing instances where things looked bad for the individual, but God rescued them.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but it’s not. He really is our advocate. Job knows this. God blessed Job beyond his wildest dreams. He had walked with God and the Lord blessed him.

Job is in a low period. Things have bottomed out. His wife sees this and tells him to curse God and die. She may be the one area of his life that wasn’t good. All are against him. I can’t imagine how low things are for him.

Fortunately God know us and won’t allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle (I Corinthians 10:13). We’ve all had low times and will continue to have them. Without God we can get sick with worry. With Him there’s hope. So much hope. Job knows this.

All this is because of God. Job can know that God will care for Him. He doesn’t know about life’s circumstances, but He does know that God will rescue him. It reminds me of the hymn, “It Is Well.” The writer lost his family while they were crossing the Atlantic. In all this he knew God can handle it.

Lord, I feel this faith. Thank You for it. It’s all You. Thank You for reaching down and snatching me up. Thank You for my godly mother who prayed for us all. Even though I had a disapproving step father, You have me a loving mom. She was “All in” for You. She prayed that we would also be “All in”. Thank You for keeping us. Be with my wife and daughters. Let them be “All in”. Thank You.
