Joshua 3:13
“And it will come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, that is, the waters which are flowing down from above; and they will stand in one heap.”
Faith is required by the priests. They were told to step into the Jordon. It would have been nice not to get their feet wet at all. Stepping in showed a belief that God would do it. Like Peter walking on the waves, he had to step out of the boat.
God asks us to step out in faith. We take a step in that direction as if the miracle had happened. We don’t always know what God will do. We do know He is powerful and will make a way. We don’t know what His action will be. We step out knowing He will make a way.
He will work His will. Many won’t even be aware. Some will. Those He intends to reach. God isn’t showy. He doesn’t do miracles for the skeptics. Here’s what Jesus said in Matthew 16:4, ‘A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.’
I love how God does so much under the radar. He is the almighty God who is able to do anything. Yet, He is humble and isn’t seeking to impress. So, we His followers, aren’t meant to impress. We humbly go our way and do His will. Sometimes He will do a big miracle, usually not. We don’t need that. We know how He works. We don’t need the show to believe Him.
He is trying to reach everyone. Jesus said in John 12:32, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.” He is the original Fisher of men. He knows us so well. He knows what bait to use. But many use their free will to ignore His ways. They might not know they are closing the door to Him, but they are. They don’t like His ways.
They don’t know that His ways are life giving and liberating. Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.” When we submit to His Lordship we are becoming free. Yes, we are restricting ourselves to His will. Yet, He is the liberator. So, we are becoming free. This is a stumbling block to many.
What they don’t know is that when they reject God, their thinking is off. Romans 1:21 says, “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened.” They think they’ve ascended, but not so.
Lord, thank You for the way of faith. It’s the way of freedom and life. Thank You for the daily path and the way of freedom.
