Hosea 6:6
“For I desire loyalty rather than sacrifice, And the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”
Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” We all suffer from this. We have our opinions and the way things should work. That is why God has given us His Word. So we will know what He wants.
I used to struggle with this verse. More specifically the verse about loving Him. I would be in worship times and I would see others appear to be so lovingly praising God. I didn’t feel that. I thought my worship was hollow and unfeeling. However, Jesus’ words in John 14:15 were helpful, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” He was equating love with obedience. Feelings weren’t a part of things.
This truth wiped away my guilt. This illustrates another one of Jesus’ words, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set free you”, (John 8:32). God’s Word is so wonderful. It shows us the way.
The opinions of man can be so different from God’s. We feel so justified with them. Like our arguments will persuade God. It’s a frightening thought to stand before God and give an account. Once there we will be afraid to open our mouths. We will instantly know the futility of our reasons. Yet, we’ve based our eternity on them.
Romans 1:22,23 is the result of not following God’s ways, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures.” When we lean on our logic instead of God this is the result. They are exchanging God for their own system of beliefs. What comes to mind are those in the environmental movement. They are worshipping nature.
We need to bow before Him. We might like our ways better, but we need to yield to Him. I’ve know those who don’t believe in taxes and don’t pay them. However, the justice system forces them to pay or go to jail.
I Peter 3:15 says, “But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect”. We are to reason with others. The last sentence is key, to do so with gentleness and respect.
I’m not an expert with this, but often little thoughts work well. Not a full set of reasons. Something to think about or a scripture. God uses those words, expecially when we use His words.
Hebrews 4:12 gives a reason behind the power of God’s Word, “But the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” When a scripture gets into the heart of a person it grows. If they yield to it, they are going towards Christ.
We should also pray for those we share with. God is powerful and will answer those prayers.
God, help us to follow You. Help us to heed Your Words.
