Band of Brothers

I Chronicles 12:18
”Then the Spirit covered Amasai like clothing, the chief of the thirty; and he said, ‘We are yours, David, And are with you, son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, And peace to him who helps you; Indeed, your God helps you!’”
David didn’t know this group of warriors and he asked them who they were for? This is their response. This is amazing on many levels. First off, this response is inspired by the Spirit. They are sent from God or at least their decree of allegiance. Now, David was truly special. However, God loves everyone, so I believe this blessing could be personalized. God would like to bring us peace and He would like to help us.
This is part of the good news, “Immanuel, God is with us”. He came to earth as a baby to live life as we do and go to the cross for our sins. He rose from the dead to promise our resurrection. But more amazingly, God can be with us, if we accept His sacrifice and follow Him.
Life is great, but small in comparison to what it could be if we accept Him. Today’s verse is one of the blessings. David is on the run from Saul. He needs help. This group is it’s own band. God knows what we need and would supply it, if we accept Him. This was completely unexpected. Help came.
What also came was human fellowship and the support of friends. We need this. God will give us a good support group, if we follow Him. They won’t give this great pledge of allegiance, but it will be a blessing. We will feel supported. They are great and they are from God.
God also brings peace. Colossians 3:15 says, “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body. And be thankful.” If we are in Christ His peace will guard our hearts. We do have to let it. There are plenty of things that make us anxious. If we follow Him, He offers His peace. We have to trust Him. It’s like someone handing us a gift. We have to receive it. David could have had the enemy come upon him at any time. God sends His help to bring us peace.
David could have been busy with a task and caught alone and vulnerable. If these were enemy forces, he may have been in trouble. In Christ, we can leave the “keeping our back” to God. We aren’t to be foolish, but beyond average precaution, God has our backs. These were a gift.
In high school, I had a friend that would open his lunch on game day to receive encouraging notes from his mom and sister. So also, God gives us encouragement out of the blue. It might be a compliment or a sunset. God sends His encouragement to all of us in Him.
Thank You, Lord, for Your love, encouragement and help. You are such a good Father. We may have bad parents, but You make up for it. They may have sown meanness, but You bring healing. Like a caring one washing out our wounds, so You heal scars. Better than any counselor. You see things deep down. You have a long term plan to bring us healing.
We do have to let go of the hurts we’ve had. Wrongs that have been done. If we think on them, hurt and anger can come. We have to let them go and let God heal.
