Let Not Evil Be Mentioned Among You

Ephesians 5:3
“But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints”.

Why is this? I would say that it could lead to temptation. Not all, but those that may have weaknsses in those areas. It reminds me of I Corinthians 8:7, where Paul refers to the topic of eating food offered to idols. Some had the freedom to do so, others didn't. If one with the freedom ate or spoke of eating in front of those that didn't might encourage those without to partake. "However, not all people have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled." To these it is sin.
Today's topic is somewhat different in that it's never ok to talk about sexual immorality. It doesn't help anyone to be descriptive about sin. It might put ideas in one's head. I had a friend that did this. I don't know where he learned any of it. More than once did I ask him to stop. It was gross and it put ideas into people's heads.
Jeremiah 5:28 speaks of some who aren't following Christ and how they excel in evil; "They have grown fat and sleek, and have excelled in the deeds of the wicked. They have not taken up the cause of the fatherless, that they might prosper; nor have they defended the rights of the needy." Paul says this about these in I Corinthians 6:11, "And some of you were such. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." We were some of those that excelled in evil, but now we've been redeemed and are in Christ.
We were redeemed from this. God saved us and is sanctifying us. He's given us a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26) and guides us in righteousness. We are now in touch with God and are living in a manner in which we were created.
When we hear people talking about these things that should be avoided, we are soiled. A few verses earlier it says that engaging in this kind of talk grieves the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). Therefore it grieves us who have God's heart and seek His ways.
We once engaged in this kind of talk that now offends us. Our old friends don't get it. I Peter 4:4 says, "Because of this, they consider it strange of you not to plunge with them into the same flood of reckless indiscretion, and they heap abuse on you." That's ok. God will work on them.
That's one reason our main group isn't to be nonbelievers. Their influence will corrupt us. We are still to be their friends, but in a limited way. God will guide us as to how much we spend with them.
Lord, keep us from evil and speaking of evil. Thank You that You've redeemed us, given us a new heart that seeks you.
