God Fights Our Battles

2 Samuel 5:20
‘So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.’

The Lord gifted David as a warrior. That's what He's done since He was a boy. But he recognizes that it wasn't his military might that won this battle, but God's power.
This was David's first fight as king over all of Israel. They were in a vulnerable spot in which the philistine king wanted to take advantage of. He would have embarrassed David and put him in his place.
What the enemy didn't know was that the living God was in Israel and He was fighting for them. David described God's power as a rushing river that the enemy tried to contain. His power broke through the controls they sought to enact. They were over run and drowned. David witnessed it and named the place Baal Perazim which means the lord who breaks out.
This is what Moses said when the Egyptians were pursuing them, "The LORD will fight for you, while you keep silent", (Exodus 14:14). God will fight for us.
David and Moses were great men of God. While that is true, Romans 15:4 gives us some insight, "For everything that was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope." These instances were written so regular people could be encouraged to trust God.
Sometimes we make our own messes. That's addressed in 1 Peter 4:15, "Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief or wrongdoer, or even as a meddler." If we repent the Lord will help us rebuild our lives. But that is not what is meant by fighting our battles. We are suffering because we've been foolish and are paying the price.
Peter continues the thought in verse 16, "but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name." God fights our battles as we are walking with Him and obeying Him.
Paul tells us how we are to be in Romans 12:18, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone." We are to live our lives sharing the love of Christ and being humble. That will offend some and they may oppose us. They may be cruel or seek to make our lives difficult. God fights these battles. We are not to stoop to their level.
We are to charitable to all, but depending on the issue, it may be best to avoid them. Proverbs 23:9 says, "Do not speak to a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words." The Lord will give us wisdom as to how to relate to them.
We are to walk confidently. True, there are some bad people out there who seek to do us harm. We are to respect that and be careful, but our God is greater. He is like the capable big brother that others respect. We can walk confidently in our faith.
Thank You Lord for fighting for us. Thank You for comforting us with these words.
