David Finally Becomes King

2 Samuel 5:3
“So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them before the LORD in Hebron; then they anointed David king over Israel.”

It finally happened, David is now king over the entire nation of Israel. This has been fifteen or so years. He was originally anointed as king in his early to mid teens. Who knows what he was thinking back then. His dad left him out of the original meeting with all the sons and Samuel. The prophet met them all and mentioned to the father, are these all the sons. No, there is still the youngest. He is out tending the sheep. By today's standards he would be in 8th grade, playing sports and just discovering girls. But he was told he would be king. Did his brothers treat him differently? Did they continue to tease him as they'd always done?
After this, he had brought his brothers lunch as they were at the battle. He hears Goliath humiliate the Israeli troops and blaspheme God. David speaks of fighting him. He's overheard and brought to king Saul. David agrees to fight Goliath. Thus is one of the most famous battle challenges in history. With his sling he knocks out the giant. Then the cuts off his head with his sword. Israel shouts and chases the philistines.
Then David is brought to Saul to play the harp. He helps out with the army as well. All is good for him. Then Saul hears the people's cheers, "Saul has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands". Saul sought to kill him after that. David had to flee and he was on the run like a fugitive for ten or so years. God spares his life on many occasions. Four hundred or so men join him as did there families. That made his entourage about a thousand people. Not easy to hide.
Eventually Saul and Jonathon died in battle and David became king of Judah. After 8 or so years comes today's event of him finally becoming king of the entire nation. He comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience and becomes one of Israel's greatest kings.
God has plans for each of us. It'll take time to get us up to full speed. Enjoy the journey. God has much to teach us. To God, all of the stages are good, not just when we are at peak efficiency. Enjoy every part.
Lord, thank You for David and all that you teach us through him. Help us to enjoy and be faithful in every part of the journey.
