I Samuel 16:12
‘”So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”’
The Lord chose David to be the next king. God had his reasons. Here's what Samuel said a few chapters earlier, '"But now your kingdom shall not endure. The LORD has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you"' (I Samuel 13:14). God was seeking someone that had a heart toward Him.
Out of the masses of people God chose David. This surprised his own family. His dad didn't even invite him. He was left to care for the sheep. He had to be called from the fields. He may have run in, dirty from his shepherd duties. Yet this was God's choice.
We learned that God's measure is the heart. A few verses earlier, Samuel thought that the oldest son was to be the king. But God corrected him by saying, 'But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."' (I Samuel 16:7).
The fact that God looks at the heart is a great equalizer. For not all of us have obvious gifts on the outside. These could be appearance, stature, personality, voice and so on. However, we can all be sincere and love God.
Another comforting fact is that God often chooses those that are less. I Corinthians 1:27 says, "but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong". We don't have to be on anyone's top ten list. We don't have to be the movers and shakers. The Lord wants to use any of us. Being of little significance may increase our chances of His use.
Not only does God use those that are lesser, He has a special place in His heart for them. Matthew 25:40 says, “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’" Most people are average and greatly unknown to the masses. That puts most of us as lesser. I realize there are more that are lesser than the average. However, God sees us and cares for us.
We don't have to be part of the cool crowd. God sees us right where we are. It takes much pressure off if we know God wants us in whatever status we are in. To all people in all groups, He says, '"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light"' (Matt 11:28-30). Anyone who is weary and burdened, He invites them to come.
We all seek to be wanted. We've got that in God. He loves and wants us all. I know that makes us one of billions, but He is able to give attention to all that seek it. He's God and can attend to us all.
Lord, thank You for choosing us. We might not be impressive by the worlds standards, but You want us. Thank You that by You we are seen.
