I Samuel 2:2
“There is no one holy like the LORD, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.”
The Lord has built within us a thirst for Him. There are endless stories of isolated cultures and how the people knew a version of God through nature and their consciences. The Lord communes with them at the level that they understand.
Some seek to satisfy the “God thirst” by many means. It may be by other religions, relationships, work, hobbies, substances, sex, food, exercise, and so on. These are all part of His creation and are good in moderation. However, if God isn’t part one’s life, then there will be a hollowness. That list of items could be pursued with gusto and unlimited resource. Yet without Him, those things will become stale and boring. Isaiah 55:2 verifies this, “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight yourself in abundance.”
On one occasion, Jesus saw that the crowds were following Him for His food provision. He sought to test their commitment by saying, “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you can have no part of me”, (my paraphrase). Many felt uncomfortable and left. Jesus looked at His disciples and said, “Will you also leave?” Peter said, “Where can we go? Only You have the words of eternal life.” He knew that every other life source would result in emptiness. Following Christ will have uncomfortable moments. But we begin to rely on all He has to offer. We say, with Peter, “Where can we go?”
Thank You, Lord for who and what You are. You satisfy us on every level. Help us to proclaim like Hannah, “You, Nor is there any rock like our God.”
