Soul and Spirit

I Thessalonians 5:23
“And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
This verse differentiates between soul and spirit. They are two different parts of us. What are they? I’ve heard it said that the “spirit is the real us”, Chuck Smith. It’s the eternal part of us.
Our spirits were the part that had to be redeemed. It was separated from God. It craves to be reconnected with the Lord. When we are in relationship with Him, it’s our spirit that interfaces. Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” This fellowship is sweet. Our cup overflows, Psalm 23.
What is our soul? It’s been said, that “it’s our mind, emotion and will”, Chuck Smith. It’s the human part of us. I’ve also heard it called the human trinity. The South has it’s Soul Food. More generally called comfort food. When we are sad, we eat tasty, but often unhealthy meals to feel better. It hits our soul.
Our soul is subservient to whatever appetite is fed, either fleshly (worldly or spiritual). A story about an a native american chief that came to Christ had this to say, “It’s as if there are two dogs within. The stronger is the one that is fed the most.” Our soul responds to the spiritual or the fleshly world. It depends on which one we feed the most.
A few more words about the appetite that’s fed. Galatians 5 has much to say. “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity,” etcetera. “I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God”. While “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Lord, help us to sow to the godly part. Help us further to remain connected to You.
