I Samuel 1:21
“Then the man Elkanah went up with all his household to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and pay his vow.”
In our relationship and service to the Lord, we are to have habits, customs and traditions. Elkanah took an annual trip to offer sacrifices and pay his vow. This is what a good jewish family did. We are to have our own godly habits. Some are going to church, reading the bible, prayer, fellowship and service.
Jesus had His own. Luke 4:16 says, “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.” To put this in today’s vernacular, He helped out with the weekly church services.
We should also have our traditions. We should have our own quiet times when we read the bible, pray and worship. We should be involved in a church. Just as Jesus did, we should use our talents to serve in some sense.
Why is this important? God created us for community. He established the church for involvement. It’s a major way He connects with people and meets needs. Our involvement blesses us and others.
Some don’t participate. Paul says in Hebrews 10:25, “not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” They miss the encouragement and growth that results from meeting.
Lord, help to have our own godly habits and traditions. Help us to bless and be a blessing as a result.
