The Promise of Heaven

I Thessalonians 5:9-11
“For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.”

There was a misunderstanding about Christ’s second coming and the afterlife. Paul spends time on these subjects. The church was concerned about their loved ones who had died. Did they miss out on God’s purposes after the second coming? Paul is says, no. Whether “we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.”
The afterlife concerns all of us. Most religions address it. Much sacrifice and holy practices are required with no guarantees. Jesus’ offer in Matthew 11:28 comes to mind, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” Those outside of Christ are weary. They’ve been working for years with consciences that don’t provide any relief. The gospel is truly good news to these.
Christianity is unique in that it offers it freely. Isaiah 55:1 says, “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost.” God’s mercy and grace offers it for free.
We have a difficult time with this. We are raised with personal responsibility and accountability. We think that we need to improve our behavior, particularly in light of our shortcomings and sins. Our focus is so drawn there that we can’t conceive of grace and forgiveness. Yet, it’s true. Heaven is free to those who accept His offer of forgiveness.
Lord, thank You for Your gift of forgiveness and Heaven. May it provide rest.
