I Thessalonians 5:4
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;”
If we are in Christ, then we are not in darkness. This is great news. There are many aspects to this darkness. Eph 4:8 says that we were darkened in our understanding, alienated from the life of God. Before Christ there was much we didn’t know. It would have been like explaining radio waves to a three year old. It wouldn’t penetrate. 1 Corinthians 2:14 says it like this, “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.”
Due to this lack of understanding of spiritual things, the talk of the 2nd coming or the rapture would be seen as foolishness. Many skeptics are very vocal about their opinions and some have large platforms. They will publicly ridicule those who have faith stances. We see it from comedians and in movies. David says in Psalm 52:7 that they are bold in their wickedness. They trust their power and wealth.
Another aspect to darkness is a moral one. John 3:19 says, “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.” We all have undesirable parts of our lives that we are seeking to be rid of. This passage is referring to those that have bad behavior that they celebrate. There is no shame.
The problem with sin is that it has an eroding effect. If we cling to it, then the greater the erosion. Lately I’ve been seeing the present photos of famous people from the 70’s. They’ve aged so poorly that they are hardly recognizable. They’ve lived decadent lives. That what sin will do to anyone who embraces it. They are choosing to live in darkness.
Lord, thank You for calling us out of the dark. Thank You that You are still calling to anyone that would hear.
