I Thessalonians 2:13
“For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.”
This verse speaks of the miracle of The bible. The end portion says, “the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.” What is the work that it performs?
Hebrews 4:12 gives us some insight: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” We have many errant thoughts and motives. The Lord uses the bible to highlight those.
The Holy Spirit also uses it to guide us in our thinking. I Corinthians 2:16 says we “have the mind of Christ.” Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” The bible teaches us to avoid poisonous thoughts.
The Parable of the Sower gets into more specifics as to how the bible works in us. Luke 8 refers to the four attitudes of the heart (types of soil): receptive, preoccupied, worldly concerns and vulnerable to the devil’s influence.
The Luke passage refers to biblical thoughts and how they need to be tended like a plant. If we ignore it, there’s no growth. When we think and pray on it, then we become more like Christ and more connected to Him.
Lord, thanks for Your Word. Help us to stay in it and help us to comply with it’s promptings.
