Deuteronomy 25:19
“Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.”
The Israelites went through different seasons and different levels of development. They were in slavery, then they were delivered in a dramatic way. They had the wilderness wanderings. Next they went to the promised land. They battled the neighbors. They finally reached the stage mentioned in the passage. They had rest from their enemies.
We also have our seasons and developmental stages of faith. We are to come to a point(s) of rest. On one hand, it’s a level of maturity. On the other, it’s a season. Today, I’ll focus on the rest that comes from maturity.
The Lord wants us at a level that is one of rest. In Matthew 11:29 Jesus says, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” This is a developmental stage for a christian.
People go through predictable stages in life. There is the young child, elementary age, middle and high school ages and so on. These stages have predictable traits and struggles.
The christian has developmental stages as well. I John 2:12-14 refers to them. The young christian is leaving a life of sin and trying to grasp God’s forgiveness. The adolescent christian is zealous for God and in serving Him. The adult christian knows God. The adult walks with God, as Adam and Eve did. There is a steadiness. The rest referred to is part of life.
Lord, thanks for Your rest. Help us to grow in maturity, so we are resting in You.
