2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
God has given us great brains to function in life. He takes joy in watching us. It’s something akin to atta boy. We are to learn from our experiences. We generalize from them and create our own hypotheses: fire is hot, that person is kind, driving fast is dangerous and soup is boring.
Most of these schemas that we develop are personal, some are general. Most don’t fit into the scale of being right or wrong. They are more about efficiency or personal taste.
When it comes to understanding God, we also create our ideas. There is the personal development of ideas and experiences. However, they are to be formulated through what God has revealed about Himself in the bible.
Today’s passage describes an error in how some view God and His timing. It says, “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness”. We would look upon God and His promise about the Second Coming as slow. But that’s not the case. He has given us signs of the end, but He hasn’t given us a time. So, we can’t say He’s late.
No one would have thought life would have continued thousands of years after Christ. Most in the early century thought it would have been in their time. In fact, most generations thought it would have been soon. That’s the genius of The Lord. He worded things in such a way and He created us such that we would have the concern of wanting to be ready. The reason He did this is in today’s passage: “not wishing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.”
Lord, help us to gain our knowledge of You through the bible. Thank You that You are patient, wanting all of us to come to You.
