Idolatry

1 John 5:21 My little children, keep yourselves from idols Our culture prides itself on being enlightened. We look back on history smugly. People are frequently judgmental with accusations of racism and all sorts of phobias. We see those in history bowing before idols and see them as lacking understanding. Yet, John tells us to beware of idols. Is our culture in danger of idolatry? What is idolatry? Idolatry was referenced in the commandments. “I am The Lord your God. You shall have no gods/idols before me.” Idolatry is when we raise something to a level that is our chief passion or concern. Sometimes it can be discovered by the amount of time we dedicate to it. Some common passions are sports, cars, academics, fashion, gossip, relaxation, the news, tv, facebook, money, work, religion, and more. How do we know if we are in danger of idolatry? First, we need to understand that God gave us this great world to enjoy. Adam and Eve were to spend time gardening, hiking, interacting with nature, time with God, enjoying the stars and more. To enjoy His creation was part of it’s purpose. A large part. So, it’s not wrong to have hobbies and interests. In it’s right place, it’s a form of worship. Eric Liddle in the Chariots of Fire, “God made me fast and when I run I feel His pleasure.” So, while these things can be idols, enjoying them doesn’t make us an idolator. Does God have His place? Out of the seven days, one of them was God’s. The ratio was 1:6. Do we give God a portion? Is He allowed into our thoughts, decision making? Do we spend time in worship? Do we have a light touch on things in our lives? Are we willing to give things up? If no, then we aren’t yielded to Him. This is a sign of idolatry. What are the effects of idolatry. I think of the verse that says “and He gave them leanness of soul.” Things aren’t satisfying. They will leave us empty. God does this to get our attention to turn to Him. Another verse says, “In His presence is fulness of joy.” We cling to our idols to our own hurt. To release the grip and yield to Him is freedom. Lord, help us to abstain from idols. Help us to find our joy in You
