We Have Not Because We Ask Not

Numbers 11:16,17 The LORD therefore said to Moses, “Gather for Me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and their officers and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. “Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of the Spirit who is upon you, and will put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you will not bear it all alone. God answers Moses’ prayer. God promises to do this. What interests me is the timing? What if Moses asked for help two weeks earlier? Or a month later? Or what if he never asked? Would this plan never have materialized? We are to bring our needs to God? Jesus spoke a parable about visiting a friend at midnight. Here is the end of it: 9“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10“For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11“Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12“Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Luke 11:9-13). God knows our needs and wants to meet them. However, sometimes He wants us to ask. We learn gratitude and proper dependance by asking in prayer. As parents we meet many of our children’s needs without telling them. As they mature, they learn how much is done for them. Sometimes we want them to ask. At birth, they child thinks everything is about them and all live to serve them. The terrible twos represent the frustration they feel when they learn that they and the things that they will get are greatly limited. Instead of being served they learn that they need to ask. They also learn that not all requests will be granted. We are humbled, simply in asking. We are dependant on a generous and good God. Moses asks when His burden becomes apparant. When our needs become overwhelming, we need help. Jesus said in Matthew 11:29,30 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” We are to have a burden, but it will be light. There is work to be done. It won’t be crushing. When this happens we are to ask The Lord for help. He wants to help. We can have confidence that He will help us in these times. Lord, thank You that You answer prayer. Thank You that You want our burden to be light. Help us to trust You with this.
