The Sad Times

Numbers 11:14, 15 “I alone am not able to carry all this people, because it is too burdensome for me.So if You are going to deal thus with me, please kill me at once, if I have found favor in Your sight, and do not let me see my wretchedness.” Moses is in a very low place. He is shepherding the people. Now they are in an unhappy state. They aren’t in danger or missing any sustanence. They miss the meals they had in Egypt. They are complaining to the point of tears. Moses is disgusted. He knows they aren’t being grateful. He sees the enormity of the people and their bad attitude has been infectous, making Moses sick. Moses hits the wall. In athletics, people will work hard to the point that they have expended their energy. They are standing, but they can’t go on. They don’t have it in them. Here Moses asks God to take his life. This clearly is a form of depression. David says in Psalm 13:2-4 “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.” On occasion we all despair. Some are deeper than others. I think of the “Foot Prints” poem. The person look back on life and saw the single foot prints at the darkest stages. It’s then Jesus said that He carried him. We certainly need Jesus. David models what it’s like to poor out his sadness to God. We need to sit before Him in stillness. We also need others. This may paritally be what made the David/Jonathon friendship so famous. David was confused and sad. Jonathon was a huge fan of his. He would encourage and help. Jesus needed the disciples in the garden. They couldn’t keep their attention to help Him. They slept. Lord, thank You that You are there for us and You give us others that are there for us in these dark time. Help us to come to You and be still.
