Numbers 6:24-27 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, “speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, ‘On this wise you shall bless the children of Israel, you shall say unto them “The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The Lord make His face to shine upon thee. And be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift us his countenance upon thee and give thee peace.” The last word in this blessing is peace. There are various types of peace. There is inner peace, peace amongst friends and coworkers, peace amongst groups and peace amongst nations and most importantly, peace with God. People seek peace by many means. Some seek it with hobbies and interests. Some seek it through relationships, through careers, music, drugs, religion and on and on. There is this inner ache, an emptiness that always returns. John 4: says, ‘Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”‘ This woman was not at peace. She tried to satisfy this with relationshi ps. While these are good and fulfilling, they won’t fill the deepest part. Jesus said that the person will thirst again if they seek fulfillment here. Are these pursuits wrong? No. Most are God given and meant to bring satisfaction. However, not at the deepest level. All of these things are a blessing, when balanced in moderation. The rich, young ruler came to Jesus and asked how to inherit eternal life. Jesus said to sell it all and come after me. The point wasn’t that wealth was bad. But when we have too strong of an attachment to them, then it’s unhealthy. If we aren’t willing to part with something, then it has too strong of a grip on us. The peace that God gives is a biproduct of peace with Him. When we accept’s Christ’s sacrifice for our guilt, we are no longer at odds with God. It’s not only a legal innocense, but a reuniting with God. When this happens, we are no longer shadowed from His presence. It’s like moving from the shade to the sunlight. We get warm. God comes and lives in us. We were designed for this. Without Him, any pursuits of peace, end up empty. How do we sustain this peace? When we receive Christ, He is to become our Lord and Saviour. We’ve discussed the saving part. The lordship part is a daily submission to His will. We need to be in the bible to see what He wants. If we go against His wishes, our conscience interferes with this peace. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 says to “not quench the Spirit.” This is what happens as we ignore His words and His guidance in our lives. His voice and His peace become feint. He is no longer our lord, if we aren’t obeying Him. Lord, thank You for Your peace. Help us to stay in Your Word and walk in Your ways.
