1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. This passage appears to indicate that christians won’t sin. I’ve known people who have believed and taught this. Very sad. This is a huge burden. I’m not sure how they reconcile the times they sin. We know it doesn’t mean this for in the first verse of chapter 2 it says, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” When we see passages that appear contradictory, we need to interpret that within the entire body of scripture. We aren’t to pluck one passage out and make an interpretation. Someone once said, “Interpret scripture with scripture.” This is a basic rule of understanding the bible. What does this passage mean when it says “whosoever abideth in him sinneth not”? It means that we don’t let sin abide within us. If we abide in Christ, sin can’t abide in us. To abide is to take up residence. We will stumble and sin, but God will convict us of it and we will seek to stop. We will hate it, as will God. We both will be at work to stop. Some believers wrestle with particular sins their entire lives. Those that have addictions live a restricted life. This is how they avoid sin. They can’t be near it. They have to avoid those that may have liberty in that area. Lord, thank You that You put within us a disgust for sin. Thank You that You help remove it from us.
