1 John 2:12-15 “I write unto you little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His names sake. I write unto you fathers because you know Him who is from the beginning. I write unto you young men because you have overcome the evil one. I have written unto you little children because you know the father. I have written unto you fathers because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written unto you young men, because you are strong and the word of God abides in you and you have overcome the evil one.
This is an interesting passage. John describes the three levels of maturity in the christian life: little children, young men and fathers. He addresses each twice. I believe he describes common stages of each.
With the children, he focuses on forgiveness. Young christians have recently been forgiven and are trying to process that meaning. They easily fall under condemnation. On occasion some think that they committed the unpardonable sin. Their lives revolve on how to act, obedience and forgiveness.
John later says, “you know the father”. They do know the Father, but they’ve just been adopted. It’s going to take time for them to understand God’s love. They know Him positionally, but it’s almost stated as a goal experientially. They need to get to know Him better as Father. I think of the neglected or abused pet that’s been adopted. The dog may be skittish for a while. After the months and years go by, the dog becomes secure in the family’s love. They become a different animal; more relaxed and happy. The beginning of the christian life, many take a while to feel forgiven and loved.
John addresses the fathers next. He says of them, “you know Him who has been from the beginning”. The ones at this maturity level have dealt with forgiveness. They also know that condemnation isn’t from God. So, the issues of guilt and forgiveness aren’t prominent. These walk with God throughout their day. They are more aware of the multitude of blessings that God rains down daily. All His children receive these blessings. The mature on is more aware. These could be enjoying a piece of fruit and be filled with gratitude for His great creation.
The third maturity level addressed is the young men. These are zealous individuals who want to serve The Lord. They tend to go to church several times per week. They want to learn more about the bible. They share their faith often. The devil fears these. They are active in rescuing many from his side. They are gaining strength, but are still gaining tact. The phrase “bull in a china closet comes to mind”. The devil fears them for they are strong and step out and act on their faith.
These are all good stages. Thank You, Lord, for them all.
