1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We will sin as we go through life. We will transgress the commandments. What is considered sin? Is that which makes us feel guilty? We feel prompting to obey. If we oppose those, is it sin? Or is it only when we transgress a commandment? James 4:17 says, “Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
God has promised to forgive. He is faithful and just to forgive us. Some of our sins are bad. We aren’t worthy of forgiveness. However, God will come through. Jesus said that He will forgive 70 times 7. We can rest in the fact that we haven’t committed the unpardonable sin.
He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. To be righteous is to be in a right relationship. Unrighteousness is when our sin wrecks relationships. Six of the ten commandments are about our relationship to others: honor mother and father, don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t bear false witness and don’t covet their goods or their wife. Commiting any of these puts us in a wrong relationship with that person.
We are to confess our sins. Even though we’ve been for any sin we commit, we are to confess and ask for forgiveness. When we sin we feel the affects. As we confess, we are cleansed. Yes, we are already clean, but our feet have been muddied. It’s like Jesus washing the disciples feet. God will help with the residue that we feel.
The relational sins may require some reconciliation. It’s helpful to go into that circumstance confessed and cleansed. Hard work awaits us. Fixing relationships takes time. We are dependant on their timing. We need to bring this to God, also. He works in all of our hearts.
Thank You, Lord, that You forgive and cleanse us. Help us to come to You and ask, when we sin. Help us to stay with You and get cleansed.
