What It Means To “Do It Unto Me”

Exodus 16;8
Moses said, “This will happen when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the LORD hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against the LORD.”
Moses’ last comment is concerning “Your grumblings are not against us but against The Lord”. The people may have disagreed. They may have said, “We had no intention of directing that towards God. That would be disrespectful.” The bible contains much about honoring God.
God takes this personally. This makes sense, as God is the one that is doing the leading. The pace of the journey and where they go depends on where the flame and cloud go. I’m not sure if God takes our poor treatment of others personally. I want to expound on that.

Matthew 25:35-45 says, 35‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’…44“Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45“Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’
This is a wonderful and “eye opening” passage. It causes us to see needs differently. Those that we help (or ignore) God sees this as an action done to Him. It adds an extra motivation to be helpful. We should help because we have compassion. However, sometimes we need nudging in the compassionate direction. Knowing this would do that.
Humans are unique to creation. The Lord has said that we were made in His image. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but that may have something to do with our topic. We have a special touch of God on us. John 3:16 makes it clear that God loves everyone. Just like parents would remember how someone treated their child. So God takes treatment of others personally. In the Matthew passage, Jesus says, “to the least of these brothers of mine”. I’m not sure if that’s all of humanity or believers only.
One more aspect of this is on respecting godly authority. Moses was God’s representative. David had this attitude toward Saul in 1 Samuel 24:5,6 It came about afterward that David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe. So he said to his men, “Far be it from me because of the LORD that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the LORD’S anointed.”’ 1 Timothy 5;17 says, “The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.” We are to give honor to our church leaders.
Lord, help us to give honor and help to those that we come into contact with. Give us to compassion and courage to reach out. May it be said of us that we have done good things unto You.
