Exodus 13:5,6
“It shall be when the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall observe this rite in this month. “For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD.”
God is instituting a holiday that they were to observe. This great deliverance that He gave. It’s not to be forgotten. Nor is it to be something lightly referred to. It’s to take seven days. And on the seventh day, there is to be a feast.
At times God does things in a grand fashion. The phrase, “biblical in proportion” is most likely referring to the largeness of the Exodus demonstrations. This is symbolic of what Jesus would do in the future. He was to die for our sins and thus deliver us from the power of sin and death. If the symbolic was to be celebrated for an entire week on a yearly basis, how much more the actual? Jesus gave us communion for such a purpose. Paul refers to this in 1 Cor 11:23-26, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”
“For as often as…you proclaim the Lord’s death”. This was a big deal. We are to honor what Jesus has done through communion. Human nature gets bored easily. We know the specifics of the cross. So because we’ve heard it before, our interest fades. However, we shouldn’t yield to this. We should learn to enliven the experience. We can reflect on times we’ve been delivered to make it fresh. We can imagine some of the bad paths we may have been without Christ. We are to make it meaningful. This shouldn’t be difficult. God is continually helping us.
Lord, thank You for Your sacrifice. Thank You for Your deliverance. Help us to remember Your sacrifice well and often.
