Hebrews 13:18
“Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.
This is a great goal, to live honorably in every way.”
I’m sure the writer says this so he and his crew could be a good example for the gospel. We want our lives to be attractive, so people will want to know Christ. Sometimes our behavior may drive people away. Our lives will be more visible and open to more scrutiny. Jesus spoke of our lives as being a city on a hill (Matt 5:14). We don’t want to be stumbling blocks. In Corinthians Paul spent some time on christian liberty. Part of that was the verse, “all things all lawful, but not all things are profitable” I Cor 10:23. While anything lawful is open to us, we are to be careful so as not to stumble anyone. Verses 28 & 29 of Corinthians 10 points this out: ‘But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake; I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s.’ We have wonderful freedom in Christ, but we don’t want to abuse it and cause some to speak poorly of God’s people. This is for whom we are to live honorably. The writer refers to a clear conscience as a gauge. As our conscience points things out, we weigh them to determine if they are legitimate. Lord, help us to be a good example for You.
