When Issues Of Faith Become A Cultural Taboo

Genesis 46:34
When Pharoah calls you and says, “What is your occupation?” You shall say, “your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,” that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every sheperd is loathesome to the Egyptians.
Many cultures have practices that are offensive to others. God’s people were sheperds. This was offensive to the Egyptians. We, as christians, have practices which others are uncomfortable with: talking about God, the name of Jesus, particular convictions, etc.
Why is it people are uncomfortable to talk about God? It could be guilt. They fear they may need to make a change, if they learned more. The name of Jesus causes people to squirm. That’s probably why it’s become profanity. This also be for the same reason as mentioned. It also is because of who it represents, the holy God. Lastly, particular biblical convictions make people uncomfortable: prolife, traditional marriage, etc. More and more our culture is becoming hostile towards christians because of these convictions. The trends make it seem that it will become even more hostile.
What is our attitude to be? Joseph was told them to be forthright with Pharaoh. We are to be confident in our beliefs. Not that we speak of them to everyone we come in contact with, but when the topic arises, we aren’t to be ashamed. As a young christian, I was very bold and brought up these topics constantly. In hindsight, I would be bold in the areas which introduce people to God. Being in a relationship with the Lord has been incredible. To speak of that is good news. I would be less forthright with particular convictions.  Lord, give us wisdom as to when to speak and the courage to do so, at the right times.
