1 Peter 1:4 “to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,” We don’t have much of a conception of what imperishable and undefiled are. Whatever we have received her fades and loses our interest. One of the things that has improved is my marriage. It has always been great, but it has only gotten better. When I was young, I did crave things. I can recall wanting things for christmas. These were good, but I do recall my interest fading quickly. I probably craved relationships and respect more than things. I don’t know if I was aware of that then. Most of my desires and wishes were wrapped up in them. Jesus said in Matthew 10;19,20, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.” We can store up reward in Heaven. So, based on how we live, we can accumulate more. Is it stuff, property, title, responsibility, relationships or the quality thereof, is it more access to God, etcetera. Probably all of that. Jesus said in Matthew 6:5, “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.” If we seek the praise of men, then we have our reward. We need to check our motives. We probably have some degree of wanting praise. To want to be recognized is not wrong. I think God put that in us. David says in Psalm 23, “You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemy.” How are we to balance our desire for recognition with Jesus’ warning against self promotion? He helps us in Luke 14:10 “But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you.” We are to take the lower seat. Don’t make the mistake and advertise that we’re taking the lower seat. Otherwise that is our reward. He will allow us to be recognized in His time. It’s nice to learn to live without the praise of man. Lord, thank You that You want to reward us now and in Heaven.
