Esther 9:24
“For Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast the Pur (that is, the lot) to crush and destroy them.”
Haman cast the lot to determine when the date of destruction would take place. Why did he cast the lot? One commentator said superstition. He clearly did not fear Israel’s God. He may have had his own god or possibly a general superstition.
The result of the lot was for it to happen in about a years time. This fortunately gave Mordecai and Esther time to avert it. Proverbs 16:33 says, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.” God was intervening. The first thing He did was give them latitude in terms of the calendar.
Haman’s allies saw things turning against him. Esther 6:13 says, “And Haman informed Zeresh his wife and all his friends of everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish origin, you will not prevail over him, but will certainly fall before him.” They had the same superstition Haman had. But this time it had turned against Him.
Haman trusted the lot, but it condemned him and this great day of deliverance was name lot (Purim). The message is that God is greater. Fear Him, trust Him. Mordecai did, Esther did and they were rescued. Haman opposed Him and was destroyed.
Thank You, God for Your great deliverance. You help those who trust You. You’ve save us and You seek to bless our lives. When we come against calamity, You will navigate a way through it. Thank You, Lord.
