God Honors Faithfulness

Nehemiah 13:14

“Remember me for this, my God, and do not wipe out my loyal deeds which I have performed for the house of my God and its services.”

I don’t recall seeing this verse. It’s a glimpse into Nehemiah’s humanness. My perception of him is he’s a very capable man who has great understanding. He knows political power and how people abuse it for their own purposes. Most would have been overwhelmed and sidelined long ago. Here we see that he prays that all that we’ve witnessed him doing in his book will be remembered. Some may think that selfish. There’s no harm in asking. His prayer was answered as we are reading it thousands of years after.

Some may think this is prideful, asking that his deeds be remembered. Isaiah 42:8 says, “I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.” It’s true that God deserves the glory, this verse has it falsely going to an idol.

God does honor His servants. Psalm 23:5 says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” David talks about God blessing him in view of those who hate him. They watch on as God gives David victories, the favor of the people, peace in the land and they have no way of stopping it.

My wife and I hit some milestones a month ago. We hit high birthdays and our 35 wedding anniversary. We hosted a party for our friends and family. We had over 70 guests. It was a night of good food and good music. This is how it felt. These weren’t our enemies, but many who cared for us. None of us sought this as an honor banquet. Yet, it felt that way. There was much love there. I would say that God was the host and He poured out His love and favor on us. I’m still getting thanks for having invited them. We were glowing that weekend. We felt it approaching and could anticipate that it would be fun. Both of us invited friends, coworkers, family from way back. Most of these didn’t know of each other. They were all good people. They collection of them all magnified the moment. God sent a clear message, “These are my children, I love them, you do as well, let’s talk, reminisce  and celebrate.” We felt so loved.

God honors His children and servants. We don’t seek it. He gladly gives it. Somehow in eternity we will stand around God’s throne and praise Him. He has saved us, healed us, put us in good relationships, blessed us, used us to shared with others and bring them in the kingdom. He uses us. While we are praising Him, He has let us be a part of it. Joy will overflow. Thank You, Lord.
