Sun Stand Still

Joshua 10:12-14

‘Then Joshua spoke to the LORD on the day when the LORD turned the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, And moon, at the Valley of Aijalon! So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, Until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies. Is it not written in the Book of Jashar? And the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hurry to go down for about a whole day. There was no day like that before it or after it, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.’

Another one of God’s miracles. The bible is full of them. A talking serpent, a talking donkey, the dead being raised to life, the miracles of Egypt, Jesus healing people, Jesus feeding the multitude from a few fish and loaves and on and on. If we believe that God created the world, then all of these are far easier. He created all of the scientific laws, so He can suspend them when He chooses.

When the sun stood still all of the balance of the universe was paused. He holds it all anyways, so He can pause and restart it. I know many scientists see all of this as fairy tails. If they sought God, He would give them faith. That’s what it takes.

Faith isn’t being duped to believe the fantastic, but what’s reasonable with God in mind. Faith is a gift for those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the certainty of things hoped for, a proof of things not seen.” Faith provides certainty and proof. If we ask Him He will give it.

Creation is the biggest miracle. It provides enough proof for any skeptic. Romans 1:19,20 says, “because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” If one chooses to disbelieve, then they are ignoring the evidence God has given them. It’s ok to have questions. Ask Him and seek Him. Ask a pastor. He will satisfy us with answers if we are sincere. We might not get the answers we want, but He will make it right. It will be enough.

The journey of faith is amazing. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him.” He wants to reward us, if we seek Him. It is an amazing overflow. We become rich beyond our expectations. Not financially, but with fullness and blessing. I Corinthians 2:9 says, ‘Rather, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.”’ As a young christian I had much guilt. I didn’t understand God and His grace. I feared His will. I was certain God His will would be miserable. That is not believing in a loving God. He isn’t seeking to force us.

The Corinthian passage says that the things God has prepared for us are so amazing that they haven’t entered our mind. God made us and understands us better than we know ourselves. His blessings are far better than the things we want for ourselves. We just have to trust Him and yield to His will. Let the blessings begin.

Look at Joshua. He’s in battle and the Israelites are winning. He throws up a wish, “Sun stand still”. It does, for a day. That’s amazing. Join the journey and follow God. He will do amazing things with and through us. Believe and follow. When thoughts and wishes come to mind, ask Him. See what He does. He wants all to follow Him. He will use us to bring others to Him.

Lord, thank You for this wonderful life. You’ve blessed us with so much. You’ve got so much more. Lead us and help us to trust You.
