Genesis 37:5
“Then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.”
It is such a good thing to have God involved in our lives. God was active in Mary’s life. But when she got to her mom’s group, she didn’t share about her son’s above average ability. It is said that she “treasured all these things in her heart.” Luke 2:29
There are certainly times when we are to tell others. If it will build someone up; if it might pass on a good habit, then tell it. It may be an opportunity to witness to an unbeliever. To those that love us and won’t misunderstand, tell them.
However, to some it comes off as bragging. Joseph was so excited about the dream about him ruling over his brothers that he shared it. They weren’t a good audience. They already disliked him. It says that this caused them “to hate him even more.” Part of this is the impulsiveness of youth. We often will speak it without considering how it sounds. Our speech is to build one another up.
This is a good general principle. It may be that God wanted Joseph to share and that the brothers were supposed to hear.
Lord, help us to build others up with our speech.
