What’s a Command and What Isn’t

Exodus 8:25 & 27
‘Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” …But Moses said, “We must go a three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He commands us.” ‘
There is plenty of compromise in life and in faith. However, there is no flexibility in the commands of scripture. Many of the denominations were formed out of an emphasis on gray areas; baptism, styles of worship, organization of church leadership, etc. Paul talks about the concept, “all things are lawful, but not all things edify” 1 Cor. 10:23. This is also refering to gray areas. The big topic of their day was meat offered to idols. It was discounted in the marketplace, but just as good. But some were abhorred that it was part of pagan ritual. Paul said it was ok to eat.
There are some things that scripture forbids. The Ten Commandments still apply. Those aren’t flexible. God speaks to his own children and gives them their own limitations. While some may be able to gamble, others may not. It’s typically those that have a weakness in that area. It’s a subjective command that comes from the inside. Romans 14:23 says, “But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.” This is a very interesting passage. It describes an action being acceptable for one, because they have faith and objectionable to another, because they don’t. It may be that it isn’t so much a command, but personal convictions. These limits may exist due to an immaturity of faith, personal weakness, limited understanding of scripture, etc.. It seems to hint that these areas may change for an individual as they grow in their faith. This person should obey their conscience as they presently understand it. Just as Moses wouldn’t deviate from God’s command to accommodate Pharaoh’s flexibitlity, so we have our own standards (bible and conscience). Lord, help us to adhere to Your commands and celebrate the incredible liberty You give us.
