Galatians 6:1
“Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrong doing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well.”
This is a great insurance policy in the church. We are given the charge to check in with each other. Some may wish to be left alone. Even so, we are told to be willing to bother another, if they are falling into error.
The manner in which this is done is important, "in a spirit of gentleness". Our audience may be open, but sometimes not. If we go in an arrogant manner, they may close down.
This mindset isn't just to not offend, it should be genuine. The end of the verse says, "looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well." We stand by God's grace. If we don't know that, we will. It's a fact. We are not self sufficient.
Paul had an issue that he sought to have dealt with in 2 Corinthians 12:9. God made it clear that it would remain, as it weakened him, which in the end increased the power of God in him. Paul said, "I would rather boast in my weakness, so God's power could dwell in me". Of course we would be humble and gentle when we approach another about their failings. We know that we are very capable of our falling.
If we approach the individual in humility, they are much more prone to be open. Any hint of self confidence carries with it an attitude of judgement. They may close down, even if they know they need help.
God has multiple ways to get our attention. A big one is He speaks to the individual's heart. Revelations 3:20 speaks of how Jesus is knocking at the door of our hearts. Always pursuing. He also uses us to bring others back. In addition to that He uses circumstances. I Corinthians 5:5 speaks of how Paul turns a person over to Satan for the destruction of the body, so the soul will be saved. The Lord will uses circumstances to keep us our of trouble.
Lord, thank You that You have multiple ways to keep us out of trouble. Your Spirit directly speaks to us, You use people to reach them and finally You use circumstances to rescue us.
